Emergency Department physician Eric Kramer, MD, is at the Mt. Carmel Orphanage in LeGene, Haiti, just north of Pignon, helping provide basic medical care. Dr. Kramer, and a team of other professionals who help the orphanage each year, arrived Tuesday.
The group was unable to visit the orphanage last year due to violence in Haiti following elections. Upon arrival, Dr. Kramer said, "It's the Haiti I remember from 2010 - full of beautiful people in a bad situation."
RMH Patient Care Technician Clint Roberts went on the trip to Haiti with Dr. Kramer, acting as his medical assistant. Roberts is working as a part nurse, part pharmacist and part clinic supervisor.
The first day the temporary clinic opened at the orphanage, more than 140 patients were waiting for care.
Dr. Kramer, Roberts and the rest of the team will return to the United States on Jan. 31.
